Method and calculation

Add reproducible monochrome grain with an adjustable strength and seed.

Inputs and settings

Film Grain Image accepts Grain strength (minimum 0, maximum 100); Random seed (minimum 1, maximum 2147483647).

Worked example

Film Grain Image example — Grain strength: 20; Random seed: 42. Preview instructions: Select a still photo, then use Grain strength: 20; Random seed: 42. The result is a PNG with add reproducible monochrome grain with an adjustable strength and seed.

Output and limitations

A seeded linear-congruential sequence supplies the same luminance perturbation to all three channels of a pixel. Reusing a seed and strength reproduces the grain exactly. Highlights and shadows clip at channel limits, which can change the apparent strength.
