Data Rate Converter

Data Rate Converter lets you convert data rate through the bit per second: value × source factor / target factor. Enter your own values or load the worked example.

Method and calculation

Convert data rate through the bit per second: value × source factor / target factor. Factors relative to bit per second: bps = 1; kbps = 1000; Mbps = 1000000; Gbps = 1000000000; B/s = 8; kB/s = 8000; MB/s = 8000000; MiB/s = 8388608.

Inputs and settings

Data Rate Converter accepts Value (minimum 0); From unit (bps, kbps, Mbps, Gbps, B/s, kB/s, MB/s, MiB/s); To unit (bps, kbps, Mbps, Gbps, B/s, kB/s, MB/s, MiB/s).

Worked example

Data Rate Converter example — Value: 1; From unit: "bps"; To unit: "kbps". Computed output: { "value": 0.001, "unit": "kbps", "baseValue": 1, "baseUnit": "bit per second" }

Output and limitations

Lowercase b represents bits and uppercase B represents bytes. Decimal megabits per second and binary mebibytes per second use different multipliers as well as the eight-bit byte relationship. Network payload throughput is usually lower than a provider’s advertised line rate.

Data Rate Converter FAQs

Data Rate Converter applies the following rule to your input: Convert data rate through the bit per second: value × source factor / target factor. The worked example on this page uses the same processor as the result button.
Data Rate Converter has these boundaries: The data rate factors are fixed conversions. Unit labels specify the convention; no live data is fetched. Start by checking the value field against the units or format shown.
Data Rate Converter provides this sample: { "value": 0.001, "unit": "kbps", "baseValue": 1, "baseUnit": "bit per second" }. Use the sample button to reproduce it, then replace the inputs with your own values.
