Energy Converter

Energy Converter lets you convert energy through the joule: value × source factor / target factor. Enter your own values or load the worked example.

Method and calculation

Convert energy through the joule: value × source factor / target factor. Factors relative to joule: J = 1; kJ = 1000; MJ = 1000000; Wh = 3600; kWh = 3600000; cal = 4.184; kcal = 4184; BTU (IT) = 1055.05585262.

Inputs and settings

Energy Converter accepts Value (minimum 0); From unit (J, kJ, MJ, Wh, kWh, cal, kcal, BTU (IT)); To unit (J, kJ, MJ, Wh, kWh, cal, kcal, BTU (IT)).

Worked example

Energy Converter example — Value: 1; From unit: "J"; To unit: "kJ". Computed output: { "value": 0.001, "unit": "kJ", "baseValue": 1, "baseUnit": "joule" }

Output and limitations

Energy accounts for accumulated work or heat. A kilowatt-hour is 3.6 million joules, not a power rating. Calories here use the thermochemical definition and BTU uses the International Table convention, both stated explicitly to avoid mixing historical definitions.

Energy Converter FAQs

Energy Converter applies the following rule to your input: Convert energy through the joule: value × source factor / target factor. The worked example on this page uses the same processor as the result button.
Energy Converter has these boundaries: The energy factors are fixed conversions. Unit labels specify the convention; no live data is fetched. Start by checking the value field against the units or format shown.
Energy Converter provides this sample: { "value": 0.001, "unit": "kJ", "baseValue": 1, "baseUnit": "joule" }. Use the sample button to reproduce it, then replace the inputs with your own values.
