Add Line Numbers
Add sequential numbers to pasted text lines. Choose the first number and a literal separator to prepare notes, checklists or numbered examples.
- Choose a starting number
- Customize the separator
- Include empty lines
Start a sequence
Set Start at to 1 and keep the default period-space separator to make a conventional numbered list.
Continue existing notes
Start at 21 to continue a previous twenty-item list. Numbering increases by one for every input line.
Handle blank entries
An empty line still consumes one number. Remove blank lines with Clean Text Whitespace beforehand if they should not count.
Choose a copy format
Replace the separator with a colon, a closing bracket or a tab to match the destination document. Existing numbers are retained as text.
Add Line Numbers FAQs
No. Existing prefixes remain part of each line, so clean them before applying a new sequence.
Enter 0 as the starting value; the first three lines receive 0, 1 and 2.
